Creating Space … For Confident Leadership

Leading With VOICCE® Series.

I Am...

These are two of the most powerful words in self-leadership. You get to fill in the blanks.

YOU become the author of your own narrative.

How do you want to be seen?

What type of leader are you becoming?

What values shape you?

What strengths do you already possess?

Perhaps, most importantly - what evidence already exists in your lived experience to guide how you finish this sentence?

I am...

Driven. Capable. Competent. Impactful. Valuable.

I remember a time early in my career at General Mills when "I Am" became the central theme for how we would all recognize and honor Black History Month. I felt the weight of thsoe two words deep in my spirit. They were declarative. "I am powerful beyond measure."

Years later, as a newer yoga student, one of my favorite teachers, Amy Kreider, used those same two words to open our sixty-minute vinyasa flow. She asked us to each fill in the blanks.

"Speak your intention as if it is already true today."

I am grounded. I am present.

Neither was quite true for me at the start of class, but returning to that intention again and again shifted something in me. By the end, I was.

That experience taught me something I’ve carried into leadership work ever since:

“I am” is not just a statement of who you are. It’s an anchor to who you’re becoming.

Research on mental rehearsal shows that the brain often doesn’t clearly distinguish between a lived experience and a vividly imagined one. When you consistently name an identity with clarity and intention, you begin to reinforce it - neurologically, emotionally, behaviorally. This is the power of neuroplasticity.

But here’s the tension most leaders don’t talk about.

For many of us, the gap between our lived identity and our desired identity isn’t actually that wide - until stress enters the picture.

During seasons of uncertainty, change, or pressure, that gap can suddenly feel enormous. Confidence wavers. Old narratives resurface. The voice of self-doubt gets louder.

Imagine telling yourself, “I am an exceptional problem solver,” in the middle of a high-pressure situation, when the answers aren’t obvious and the consequences feel real.

Do you believe it?

Leadership confidence doesn’t typically start in moments like that, but it can be built. You can declare your own truth and build your identity. Through clarity, and with evidence. You don't need certainty of outcome. The impact is in the observation.

So before you ask, “What should I do?” Try asking instead:

“Who am I choosing to be here?”

And notice what shifts.

The Practice

Set aside 10 minutes for quiet reflection. Think of leadership traits that you value, and areas of strength you possess. Write each quality out on a piece of paper.

Now go through each trait and say aloud, or to yourself - "I am".

Where do you feel alignment? Where do you feel tension?

In the places of tension, stay curious. You may not feel aligned to this identity all the time - but have you ever? There’s insight there.

These quiet moments of reflection are where clarity begins. And for many leaders, this is also where having a steady, thoughtful guide can help turn insight into trust - and trust into choice.

Leadership Support
