We’ve all been stuck. Leaders feel stuck. Teams feel stuck. Sometimes it seems like the only choices are yes or no, right or wrong, this or that.


But that’s where options come in - options remind us there’s always another way.


When we lead with the belief that we have options, we empower our teams to do the same. We move from pressure to possibility. From rescuing to restoring agency.


As leaders, it’s easy to step in when someone is struggling. Our empathy drives us to fix, to protect, to carry the weight ourselves. But when we do, we unintentionally limit the other person’s growth. Furthermore, we set ourselves up for burnout, overwhelm, and exhaustion.


Empathy is essential. But empathy, without the exploration of options, can quickly become ownership. The goal isn’t to carry the problem, it’s to create the conditions where others can find their own solutions.

So, the next time you sense someone’s stuck, pause before you offer the answer. Consider one of these questions to help shift perspective, build ownership, and expand possibilities.


  • What feels possible right now?

  • What’s one small step you could try?

  • What support would be helpful - and what can you take the lead on?

  • How would you approach this if you fully trusted yourself?

  • What part of this feels within your control right now?

  • What’s one step that would help you feel a little more empowered today?

  • If there were more than two choices, what else could be possible?

  • What option haven’t we considered because it feels unconventional?

  • What does “forward” look like from here - even if it’s a small step?


Those questions open doors, for them and for you.


Because leadership isn’t about having every answer, it’s about helping others rediscover their power to explore more than one possible path forward.
