Creating Space … For Who You Are

When people say - "So tell me about yourself" - how do you respond? Do you share your titles, your role, your tenure, or what your friends call you?
I've always hated that question, and I never quite understood why. How can I sum up all that I am in a short sentence or two? And if I tell you about my role or profession, does it negate how my friends, family, or community would describe me? But what if I tell you all about the deeper, more personal parts of me - Is all my professional work ignored?
Identity is complicated - and it sits at the heart of so much more than we realize. When someone offends us, it's often our ego that is bruised. "How dare you call me selfish - I'm the kind of person that would give someone the shirt off my back."
"I'm the kind of person that gets knocked down, and gets back up."
"I'm the kind of person who puts others' needs first."
"I'm the kind of person that shows up for the people I love."
What kind of person did you show up as in 2025, and does it reflect the kind of person you want to show up as in 2026? When we ask ourselves these tougher questions, we get closer to our identity. We get closer to alignment. Is our behavior in alignment with what we want the rest of the world to experience?
If the answer is "Yes" - that's amazing. Chances are you feel minimal amounts of internal friction and conflict, and you are leading with authenticity.
However, if that answer is "I don't know" or "No" now is the time to do a bit of self-reflection.
Many of us crave a sense of peace as we step into a new year. The past few years have taught me a valuable lesson. Real inner peace doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from understanding ourselves more deeply.
Identity work is not about becoming someone new. It’s about returning to who you already are, and choosing to lead from that place with intention.
If you’re feeling called to reflect, reset, or realign as we head into 2026, consider this an invitation to pause with purpose. Clarity follows when we give ourselves the space to listen.
The Practice
Reflect on these 4 questions as you pause this season:
When I think about the phrase “I’m the kind of person who…”, what comes most naturally to mind right now?
Where did my actions this year align with who I believe I am, and where did they drift?
What behaviors do I want to strengthen because they reflect the person I want others to experience me as?
If I were to choose one word to guide how I show up next year, what quality or trait would help me live in deeper alignment?
Does this resonate? If so, I invite you to join me for one of my favorite experiences of the year: Word Up! 2026 - Craft Your Intention. Align with Your Values. Envision Your Year.
This experience is carefully curated to blend the power of executive coaching, mindful intention setting, and powerful visioning to life so that you can step into 2026 with greater clarity and unwavering focus.
Thank you for your presence. I am so excited to continue this journey with you!
With gratitude, Tian.
