Creating Space … To Pause Under Pressure

Remember that time you had to make a decision like, yesterday?
Which time, right?
I can think of so, so many times. It felt like all eyes were on me. The camera angle zoomed in on my face, frozen in place, and rather than connecting with my thoughts, all I could hear was my heart thumping through my chest. Surely everyone else can hear it too, right?
I can literally see this like a movie scene on repeat. The faces may change, the conference room may shift, but that feeling of paralysis is always there. At least until I learned to pause, to breathe, and to remind myself that I have time. I can take a breath, a beat, or even ask for the time I need to give a clear and aligned response.
Because you know what happens when we don't? Binary thinking. Suddenly, it feels like there are only two choices - push harder or pull back, speak up or stay quiet, decide now or risk falling behind. Responses suddenly become limited to only what our minds have access to in that moment of pressure. But as leaders, we owe it to our teams and to ourselves to respond from a place of clarity, not react from a place of pressure.
Under stress, the nervous system looks for speed, not perspective. It scans for the fastest way to reduce discomfort, which often narrows our field of vision. That’s when decision-making starts to feel polarized. Taking a step back to create space, room for perspective gives us greater access to what's needed most in these moments - the ability to see our options clearly.
The Practice
Take time to notice where this tension shows up this week.
When it does ask:
What feels at stake if I slow down long enough to respond from a place of presence rather than pressure?
What additional options become visible when I pause instead of pushing or pulling?
What often feels like self-doubt is actually just a nervous system response to a high-pressure moment. The more we can learn to acknowledge the tension and build new, grounded responses in the face of that tension, the more our authentic leadership has space to emerge.
Learning to pause under pressure is a practice, and like most leadership practices, it often deepens with support and reflection over time.
Thank you for your presence. I am so excited to continue this journey of Leading with VOICCE® with you!
With gratitude, Tian.
